A Russian swimmer won gold in an event in which he was the only contestant as Russia’s answer to the #Olympics failed to live up to the Kremlin’s lofty expectations.

The BRICS Games in Kazan, central #Russia, were supposed to whip up a summer of patriotic sporting fervour after Russian athletes were banned from competing in the Olympics and its national football team was excluded from the European Championships.
