What you just heard is a statement every African leader should start saying. No to easy access to African gold, uranium, diamond and cobalt. No to cheap access to African resources. For too long, the African continent has been the supplier of cheap raw materials to the West. The US, France, the UK, Australia and Germany have used these resources to build and industrialize their countries. Meanwhile, African countries have remained underdeveloped and stagnant, benefiting little to nothing from its abundant resources. But now, African leaders like President Museveni of Uganda have decided to say a resounding No to the relentless exploitation of its resources.
You see, whenever it’s been made known that a particular mineral has been found in Africa. Foreigners especially from the West and even China would begin to court the African President of that country like a man courts a woman. They would come dressed in suits and a confident look, appearing superior to the African leader. Then, they would drop a proposal, selling it that it would be beneficial to the African country. For these people, it should be enough that they would finance most of the project and provide the technical know-how. In return, the African leader will get a cut and the country at large would receive peanuts in the form of royalty.
These people would say that their investment would attract putter investors and bring jobs and overall boost the economy. But take a look at the mining sectors of every African country. The reports are glaringly obvious. Not only do African countries receive little in terms of royalty compared to the millions dollar profits the companies would make, but the mining industry has performed below their expectations. While, on paper the mining industry of some countries are said to contribute to the economy, the reality is far different.
