Snoek fishing is fast and intense. Fishermen haul in fish using handlines, strong nylon or monofilament cords. When these lines get tangled (and they often do ), many fishermen just cut off the bundle and throw it overboard. It’s quicker, and no one stops them.
These lines are durable and strong, perfect for hauling in fish, but lethal to seals. Once entangled, the plastic cuts deeper with every movement and growth. This young bull was lucky we got to him in time.
This is not just an accident, it’s a guaranteed consequence of accepted, unpunished behavior at sea.
