Medical and radiation oncology professor Syed Md Akram Hussain said that cancer was taking a heavy toll in the country, adding that the severity of the illness is spreading gradually.
‘But some steps can largely save people form the deadly diseases… Avoid tobacco and adulterate food, live in a health environment and if you see in you any symptoms [of a cancer], immediately visit a doctor and take proper treatment,’ said Akram, coordinator of the Square Oncology and Radiotherapy Centre.
The founder-chairman of the oncology department at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University estimated that more than 30 per cent of the country’s total cancer cases resulted from tobacco.
Overweight and inactive lifestyle, too, sometimes cause cancers as they reduce the immunity of body, said cancer expert Akram.
‘Unhealthy environment causes cancer in many body parts,’ he said.
