Welcome to Summer's Bay, a place where the raw power of the Bering Sea meets the vibrant green hills of the Aleutian Islands.
Located on the island of Unalaska, nearly 900 miles from Anchorage, Dutch Harbor is a place that truly feels like the edge of the world. The landscape is defined by its dramatic, treeless terrain and a history that is as wild as its weather. Summer's Bay is one of those magical places that perfectly captures the spirit of the Aleutians. With its fine volcanic sand, constant surf, and the backdrop of emerald green mountains, it’s a paradise for anyone who loves the outdoors.
But the real magic of Summer's Bay lies in what the tide brings in. As we show in this video, this is a world-class destination for beachcombing. My wife and I can spend hours here, walking the shoreline with our heads down, searching for treasures washed up from the depths. The beach is a constantly changing museum of natural and human history. You can find beautiful pieces of sea glass, their sharp edges tumbled smooth by decades in the surf, in stunning shades of blue, green, and brown—remnants of old bottles from sailors and fishermen of generations past.
Even more incredible are the ancient treasures you can find. The Bering Sea has been a vital hunting ground for millennia, and occasionally, the waves will unearth a true piece of history: ancient walrus ivory. Finding a piece of ivory, weathered by time and tide, is like holding a direct connection to the past. It’s a humbling reminder of the rich cultural history of the Unangan people and the incredible wildlife that calls this region home. Every visit to the beach is a new treasure hunt, with the possibility of discovering everything from whale vertebrae to unique fishing floats from across the Pacific.
This is what "Living My Alaska" is all about for us—not just seeing the beauty, but truly experiencing it, feeling the history under our feet, and sharing these unforgettable moments of discovery. We hope this little glimpse of Summer's Bay inspires you to find your own adventure, wherever you may be.
