I think this is a really interesting area to visit because it is very accessible. Port Hastings is the first town you hit if you’re crossing via the Canso Causeway (the only land access point to the island!), so it’s a logical starting point, and it makes a lot of sense for travellers who want to see a bit of Cape Breton without having to drive too far.
We spent our week in southern Cape Breton doing an iconic sail from lake to sea, feasting on seafood at every meal, tackling different hiking trails, and enjoying the warm hospitality the island is known for.

🏞️ Southern Cape Breton Road Trip: 1-Week Travel Guide
Join us as we explore the heart of Cape Breton Island—between Port Hastings and St. Peters—on a week-long adventure of history, hiking and, of course, seafood! Here’s everything we did, in order:
St Peter’s Canal Sailing Tour
We set sail on the MV Kúna Mara for an 1½ hr cruise through the National Historic Site’s 800 m lock system.
Learned how the double gates compensate for 3 ft of tidal change, and heard about annual events like “Swim the Canal.”
Lunch at The Island Nest
Dug into a Fisherman’s Platter (haddock, scallops, shrimp, clam strips) alongside creamy clam chowder.
Shared sides of fries, coleslaw and biscuits—all for $24 CAD each.
LeNoir Forge & Shanties
Explored the historic blacksmith’s forge (with twice-weekly summer demos), plus adjacent schoolhouse and dining-room shanty displays.
Sat at antique wooden desks and admired kerosene stoves straight out of a 19th-century cabin.
Lennox Passage Provincial Park
Braved the drizzle to visit Grandique Point Lighthouse and stroll 2 km of rugged shoreline trails.
Dinner at The Groundswell Inn
Indulged in bourbon-maple-glazed scallops with bacon, plus Cajun shrimp linguine and Thai green curry with haddock.
Enjoyed live local music in a cozy seaside tavern.
Battery Provincial Park & Jerome Point Lighthouse
Crossed the lock bridge to Battery Park for panoramic views of St. Peters Bay and busy canal traffic.
Hiked forest trails and scoped out waterfront campsites.
St Peter’s Coastal Trail Walk
Treked a 3.5 km former railbed along St. Peters Bay—great views of Battery Park and Lighthouse, plus a playful local German Shepherd.
Lunch at Lockmaster’s Pub
Savoured surf & turf (steak + lobster claw) and decadent pan-seared scallops with pea-lobster risotto.
Dined with live evening music in a charming canal-side pub.
Port Hawkesbury Community Trails
Hit the Tamarack Trail (part of Hemlock, Maple, Spruce network) for an easy forest hike celebrating the area’s pure, lichen-rich air.
The Country Kitchen Diner
Sampled hot gravy sandwiches: classic turkey and burger smothered in rich gravy with fries.
All-day comfort food at a roadside inn—meals from $8–12 CAD.
Celtic Shores Coastal Trail
Hiked a portion of the 92 km Great Trail (Trans Canada Trail), hugging the west coast between Port Hastings and Inverness.
Souvenir Shopping at Miller’s
Stopped at Miller’s for a Moose & Trees tee and maple-leaf green tea—perfect Cape Breton keepsakes.
Canso Causeway Drive
Crossed the world’s deepest man-made causeway (66 m), marveling at 10 million tons of fill that link the island to mainland Nova Scotia.
Lunch at The Cove
Splurged on Atlantic salmon on rye and savoury fish cakes with beans, all while gazing at sweeping coastal vistas.
Dundee Resort and Golf Club Stay & Storm Watch
Weathered a hurricane at Dundee Resort and Golf Club—plenty of rain-forest-style activities like kayak rentals, vineyard tours at Éileann & Briá, and on-site dining at MacRae’s Dining Room.
