Wildfires ravaged the Los Angeles area on Tuesday, fueled by strong winds that whipped flames through the region. The fires caused downed power lines and triggered explosions, creating a chaotic and apocalyptic atmosphere along the Pacific Coast Highway.

Lindon Pronto, a former wildland firefighter who now works as an expert in fire management with the European Forest Institute, said on Wednesday that while it was rare to see such a scale of destruction in January, forest fires were now a year-long risk in California.

More than 30,000 people evacuated their homes as wildfires ripped through areas around Los Angeles on Tuesday and into Wednesday.

The three major fires, which include a nearly 3,000-acre blaze in the Pacific Palisades and another in the San Fernando Valley, were propelled by strong winds. As the fires had not been contained, Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency.
