The movement of motorcycles through the Padma Bridge resumed on Thursday ahead of the Eid-ul-Fitr after the government gave conditional permission.
The motorcycle movement started at 6:00am on the day in compliance with a set of rules.
As per the rules, motorcyclists cannot speed above 60 kilometres per hour, and there should be maximum two persons riding the vehicle strictly along a designated lane.
There would be no overtaking by the bikers while the driver and the pillion passenger have to use safety kits including helmets.
The motorcyclists will not be allowed to park on the bridge in any situation to take photos or anything.
A press release issued by the Bangladesh Bridge Authority on April 18 gave the directives.
The government banned motorcycle movement after a fatal crash on the bridge on June 26, the first day of its opening to traffic.
Bangladesh Bridge Authority’s joint secretary Md Viqaruddoula Chowdhury said that up to 30 motorcycles were crossing the booths per minute.
After inspecting the toll plaza on Thursday, Road Transport and Bridges minister Obaidul Quader said, ‘Actions would be taken against those who would be found breaching conditions’.
The Bridges Division secretary, Md Monjur Hossain, told New Age that 3,385 motorcycles from Dhaka crossed the bridge between 6:00am and 10:00am on Thursday.
