In this deeply moving and spiritually insightful talk, Yasmin Mogahed reflects on two powerful chapters from her book Reclaim Your Heart—Chapter 1: Why Do People Have to Leave Each Other? and Chapter 2: People Leave, But Do They Return? These chapters center on a profound reality of life: loss. Whether it’s the loss of a loved one, a relationship, a dream, or a phase of life, we all experience moments when something we deeply value is taken away. And in those moments, many of us ask, Why?

Yasmin reminds us that when Allah removes something from our lives, it is never random, and it is never to punish. Allah does not take for the sake of taking. Rather, even in the act of removal, He is giving us something greater. Sometimes, that “greater” is not a new person or opportunity—but healing, clarity, strength, and a deeper connection with Him. Sometimes, what we perceive as loss is actually protection. Sometimes, it’s the cure our hearts desperately need.

One of the most touching examples shared in this talk is the story of Umm Salamah, a noble companion of the Prophet ﷺ, who lost her beloved husband, Abu Salamah. In her grief, the Prophet ﷺ taught her a powerful dua: "Indeed, we belong to Allah, and to Him we return. O Allah, reward me in my affliction and give me better than what I lost." She couldn’t imagine anything or anyone better than Abu Salamah—but Allah’s promise is true. She later married the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ himself. From that moment, we learn a powerful lesson: when Allah takes something, He can—and often does—replace it with something far better than we imagined.

Yasmin also draws a deep connection to the story of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who was asked to sacrifice his son Ismail (AS)—the one he had prayed for, the one he loved most. This wasn’t to hurt him; it was to test his heart. Was there anything in his life he loved more than Allah? In surrendering to that test, Allah honored him in ways we still remember today. This is the essence of spiritual purification: letting go of attachments that compete with our love for Allah.

These stories teach us that Allah’s removals are often His redirections. What feels like an end may actually be a new beginning. What feels like a break may be the start of healing. But the key is: do we trust Him enough to let go? Do we see the giving within the taking?

Our tests, especially in the things we love most, are not meant to destroy us—but to elevate us. Loss, when seen through the eyes of faith, becomes a form of mercy. It becomes a way to cleanse our hearts of unhealthy attachments and to return to the One who never leaves.

If you are going through a season of loss, this message is for you. Let Yasmin’s words remind you that nothing is taken except that something greater is being given—whether it’s peace, wisdom, or something even more beautiful than you can imagine. Trust that Allah sees the full picture. And sometimes, what He’s doing in your life is not subtraction—it’s divine substitution. #YasminMogahed #ReclaimYourHeart #IslamicReminder #SpiritualHealing #Tawakkul #TrustInAllah #IslamicMotivation #HeartbreakToHealing #DuaPower #FaithThroughLoss #AllahsPlan #HealingThroughFaith #MuslimahInspiration #IslamicWisdom #EmotionalHealing #LetGoAndTrustAllah
