Rest In Peace Junior Byles.One of Jamaica's most tragic figures, Junior Byles was also one of the island's greatest root stars. His vocals were quite unique, and although his soft, almost husky voice would never ring from the rafters nor give voice to anger, the gentle timbre still expressed deep emotions. His was the voice of the meek and was all the stronger for it. The closest comparison is perhaps with the vulnerable tones of Slim Smith, but while the former Unique made his mark with love songs, Byles would speak not for the lovelorn, but for the oppressed. The two men did share another link, however, both suffered from serious psychological problems that in one case ended one man's career and left the other in ruins.
Byles was beset by tragedy when his mother died, They say tragedies strike in threes, and this was followed by the loss of his house in a fire; adding to his misery, his wife and two children left Jamaica and emigrated to the U.S, he was living on the street, scavenging for food in dumpsters.
Named after his father Kenneth Snr, Kenneth Byles Jr. was born at Jubilee Hospital in Kingston, and grew up in the city's Jonestown ghetto, where his father worked as a mechanic, and his mother as a schoolteacher. His family were devoutly religious, and his early musical education came from singing in church. He also worked as a firefighter.
the Discomix "Fade Away" was recorded in 1975 for producer Joseph Hoo Kim; It was a massive hit in Jamaica and was also a big success in the UK, It also featured on the soundtrack for the film Rockers.
Byles died in hospital yesterday on the 15th of may, Thursday afternoon. He was 77. R.I.P.
