Three days after Velvet vanished, The Velvet Room still smelled like incense and sweat. That’s when Big Smoke rolled in — trench coat, brass knuckles on her chain, and a six-piece band called The Slow Burners. “I’m not here to chase ghosts,” she told the receptionist. “I’m here to out-funk ’em.”
They tracked nonstop from midnight to sunrise. Basslines so greasy the engineer had to mop between takes. One take ran so long the reel melted. Bobby Flame Sr. called it the sweatiest session of 1973 — and the funkiest. Velvet may have lit the flame. But Big Smoke turned up the heat.
