Jackie returned a little while later and defeathered a coot for a later meal, while Shadow delivered more fluff and both chicks took naps as best they could in the shade of Mom or Dad.
There's been more grooming, bonking, flapping, waddling and nibbling going on in between chick feedings and food coma naps! All eyes were on BC (Bigger Chick) when it decided to waddle up to the guardrails to check out the view from a little higher up. BC is a tough chick!
Sometimes Mama just needs to take more than a short break. Fiona, the flying squirrel, and her friends from under the nest, have been keeping Jackie awake and on her toes overnight. They've been trying to get just one run-around in the nest since Jackie laid the eggs. Sorry Fiona~ all access denied! No snacks, no fluff… at least until later this summer.
Shadow filled in with extra Daddy duty so Jackie could likely spend some time at the lake, clean off the chick mute on her head and perch in the peace and quiet of the forest for a bit. She returned at sunset and fed the chicks before bed.
Today, Shadow must have decided the pantry was a little sparse, so he put his fishing skills to good use. By day's end he delivered six fish to the nest and Jackie contributed two more.
BC decided to head for the rails again, so after another waddle up, it came back down and then showed off its little wings. Both chicks are eating well and crops are full. They even ate some nibbles off the nest today that missed their beaks… progress!
The chicks are still having some bonking sessions and tonight there was one in front of Jackie. She didn't interfere or try to break it up, but instead she left them to figure it out. That's the way of nature and as much as we'd like her or Shadow to step in, we must be still and let nature be.
