Two days ago, the citizens of Botswana made history, as they elected a new President that is not from the ruling party. You see, since Botswana gained Independence in 1966, all its ruling Presidents have been from a single party, the mighty Botswana Democratic party. And, for more than 50 years, many opposition politicians have tried to unseat this party, but failed, until the newly elected President, Duma Boko. However, President Duma Boko is not just turning the tide in terms of being a new party, but also in terms of governance in Botswana. Botswana has long been regarded as one of Africa's most stable democracies and a post-colonial success story having built one of the highest standards of living in the region through an economy that largely relies on diamonds. However, it came as a shock to everyone when two days ago, the Botswana Democratic Party, lost the Presidential elections for the first time since the country gained Independence in 1966. The former President Mokgweetsi Masisi was defeated by President Dumo Bomo from the opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change party. Interestingly, President Dumo Buko won a majority of seats in the election, making its candidate, Boko, the next president of the southern African country.
