Oskar Dirlewanger was the leader of the notorious Dirlewanger Unit that committed many atrocities in German-occupied areas. However many surviving soldiers of the unit went unpunished we do know Dirlewanger himself was captured by French forces at war's end. His guards were Polish and took revenge on him after they found out who he was. The Dirlewanger Brigade had killed many Polish civilians during the Warsaw Uprising. A Luftwaffe lieutenant is said to have witnessed his death.
In the night of June 4 to 5, 1945, Dirlewanger was taken out of his cell and beaten. After being brought back to the cell for the third time, he was incapable of speaking or getting up, due to his injuries. A little while later, the guards came back in the cell and ordered him again to get up and go with them. He was not able to do so. So the guards hit him in the face with their rifle butts until he died.
