LIVE: Videos Show Bodies of Trapped Illegal Miners in South African Gold Mine | Firstpost Africa
Several bodies have been recovered from the mine in South Africa's North West province, where hundreds may be trapped and at least 100 may have already died. Those trapped are illegal miners, who are facing a crackdown by the South African government. For months now, they have been stuck at the Stilfontein mine about 140km Southwest of Johannesburg. They remain trapped as authorities continue to block their food and other essential supplies since October last year to force them out and make arrests. Officials have claimed the men are hiding underground to avoid arrest. However, the operation to curb illegal mining has divided South Africa. Many critics have expressed the human rights concerns of the tough approach.
