After converting my van and having the chance to enjoy it around Cornwall where I live, I realised something was missing.

It was a bit dark in the back, especially when we close the doors to keep the weather out, as there aren’t any windows, and so I decided to install some in the back doors myself.

I had already carpeted the doors - see part 2 of this van build series for that - so had to get back to the bare metal, and could then cut out the door panels.

I sourced some tinted windows as I didn’t want people to easily be able to look in the back.

After filing the cut edges down, I primed the exposed metal to protect against rust and covered it all with rubber trim.

I then applied this black primer around the edge of the windows and the openings I would be attaching them to and then ran a thick bead of adhesive around the opening, stuck the glass in place and left them overnight to cure.

When I came back the next day, I was pretty relieved they hadn’t fallen off and - carefully - drove home.

But…. when it next rained, both windows leaked!

I was GUTTED!

I COULD try to jam a load more adhesive into the gap to try and plug the holes, but in the end I called in the professionals - which I should have done from the start! - and they cut the windows out with a cheese wire-type device, and in just over 30 minutes they had them stuck back on. We’ve had a lot of rain since and there’s not a drop in sight on the inside!
