Fate music always hits different.

Despair. Anger. Suffering. Tragedy. Hopefulness. Dreams. Misfortune.

All these and more are deeply rooted in the story of Fate/Zero and its characters. Each with their motivations, goals, and objectives.

And perhaps that’s why the entire story is such a beautifully woven tragedy: ideals and visions are set forth that have no hope of being accomplished or achieved, the writing is already on the wall, and yet we and our protagonists still dare to believe that something different will happen. We hope something different will happen.

This blend of complex emotions rings truest with Kiritsugu and Saber as characters. A full discourse on the matter would involve many spoilers and much more thinking, so I guess I’ll refrain from that (for now).

But take all those feelings and bottle them up into a song with haunting, beautiful, powerful vocals and orchestral instrumentation that sweeps and builds compellingly with the voices, accompanied by a driving bassline and rhythm guitars, and you have Kalafina’s To the Beginning. Simply epic.

Yuki Kajiura is something else.

But then take that and distill it into a piano arrangement. Nothing overly flashy, but one that utilizes the registers to convey different feelings of energy, with thick chords when necessary but light notes to create delicate contrast. Wonderfully epic.

Animenz is something else.

I feel like this is one Animenz’s more underrated arrangements probably because it lacks the technical flair of some of his more popular ones. But, much like many other scores out there, there’s a lot to unpack, analyze, play with, and manipulate.

I loved working through how to create subtle contrasts between sections, create wider and louder fortes, and create more delicate, sparkling sections. The tempo fluctuations, the grandeur, the feeling of a deep, profound sorrow that tears at the soul, all these reverberate through the music and more.

I suppose that’s why I love this piece so much; in fact, it most definitely is one of my favorite Animenz arrangements, especially to play. It’s also the one where I feel as though my thoughts and ideas are expressed the most clearly, especially given that many parts of my interpretation differs from Animenz’s.

Fate is an incredible series, and I’m looking forward to covering many more songs in the future. To the Beginning carries much more hope than Sora wa Takaku Kaze wa Utau, while Oath Sign has much more drive and Memoria has a greater feeling of finality. And of course, there’s all the Fate/Stay night (both UBW and HF) songs, too.

This franchise is simply too good.

Well, until next time then,

Watt
