The Nobel Peace Prize is awarded in Norway — unlike the other Nobel Prizes, which are handed out in Sweden — because Alfred Nobel’s will specifically said so. Why? He didn’t give a clear reason, but it likely had to do with Norway’s political neutrality and its looser ties to European power struggles at the time. When Nobel wrote his will in 1895, Norway and Sweden were still in a union, but Norway handled foreign affairs — so giving the Peace Prize to a Norwegian committee made symbolic sense. And that tradition stuck. One will, one line — and Norway got the honour.
