#Onthisday in 2016, Radovan Karadzic was found guilty of genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity. On 6 August 1992, ITN's Ian Williams and Penny Marshall, along with The Guardian’s Ed Vulliamy, uncovered shocking evidence of war crimes being perpetrated against Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) and Bosnian Croat civilians by the army of Republika Srpska in northern Bosnia and Herzegovina. ITN's crews gained exclusive access to two Serbian-run camps in Bosnia which were at the centre of persistent allegations of torture and executions. The footage and interviews obtained provided incontrovertible evidence that supposed detention centres in Omarska and Trnopolje were in fact concentration camps, and that mistreatment, torture, and executions were commonplace.
That day, ITN's Dermot Murnaghan presented a special Channel 4 News bulletin dedicated to sharing the images from Omarska and Trnopolje and covering international reaction to them. Murnaghan questioned President of Republika Srpska Radovan Karadzic about the evidence of war crimes uncovered by ITN's crews. The footage recorded and broadcast by ITN on 6 August 1992 would eventually contribute to Karadzic being convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY).
