Anyone visiting the regional passport office in the capital’s Agargaon to apply for a passport or receive it on the delivery date needs to wait in queues for hours, which causes immense suffering for them.
Applicants need to spend between three and eight hours in queues to apply by completing all the formalities, and similar patterns are seen to receive a passport when it is ready.
Talking to New Age, at least 15 service seekers who came to the Agargaon passport office either to apply for a passport or receive one said on Sunday that the services should be made hassle-free as they were paying the government for them.
Arif Ahmed, a Bangladeshi software engineer who works in Germany, was seen in a queue of 200 applicants on the ground floor of the Agargaon regional office.
At about 2:25pm, he said that he joined the queue around noon soon after he arrived at the office and was still unable to verify the documents that were to be submitted with his application.
In the verification room on the ground floor, only four officials were seen working to verify documents.
Arif could submit his application at 4:30pm finally. He said that when he reached the booth, he saw five data collection booths but only two officials.
