After experiencing peak popularity in the mid-1970s, "Do That to Me One More Time" marked a comeback for the duo, but they did not achieve further success and their contract with the record label was not renewed. Vocalist and songwriter Toni Tennille played the song for Neil Bogart on an electric piano at her home in California, with her husband Daryl Dragon present. Bogart reacted enthusiastically, saying, "This is a smash! There’s no doubt in my mind it will be your first single." According to Billboard, the song revolves around themes of sex, particularly male virility.
Toni Tennille stated that she wrote the song based on her feelings for Daryl Dragon, but later she mentioned that he ‘never paid much attention to the lyrics’ and therefore ‘didn’t know what I was saying.’
Tennille initiated divorce proceedings in 2014 to end their 39-year marriage, and Dragon was unaware of these proceedings until he received the divorce papers. In 2016, Toni Tennille, Tennille's memoir was published. In it, Tennille painted an unflattering picture of Dragon and their years together, writing that he was controlling and emotionally distant. "I can say without exaggeration that he showed no physical affection for me during our very long marriage," she wrote, claiming that the couple always slept in separate bedrooms.
They remained friends until his death in 2019, and Tennille was by his side when he passed away.
