This one has a bit of a story:This track comes as a bit of a break from my modular explorations. I've been struggling to make a home for the Digitakt. Sure, I've used it as a drum machine in some songs and in jam sessions, but I bought it to be used as a sampler for the sake of composing complete songs. Over the last several months, I've played around with it, but never really achieved that goal.
That is, until today...
Recently, my mother, a member of the Turtle Mountain Chippewa tribe, sent me some samples of her playing a traditional native american flute. I found myself wondering how I was going to use them in my music. I used some longer pitched down samples in a previous track "Rhythms of the Garden", but I wanted to compose an entire song with them. I found myself creating small micro loops with bits of her riffs, and designing synth-like leads with them. What came out of it was this track. At first I had just the bass line, then I developed more of the leads. Eventually, what I was designing began to take the shape of an actual song. As just the overlapping melodies, it still felt incomplete. I had 7 tracks, all cut up pieces of the original flute riffs. The song needed something else, so I played around a bit and landed on a simple, deep kick with a little delay. This gave the song the momentum it needed.
The story isn't over though.
Recently on Twitter, someone made a comment jokingly saying that electronic ambient musicians either pull their influences from Enya (and the like) or Kraftwerk. It stuck me that this speaks to the latter's influence on me musically, and thus "Bytesize Flute" was born, a track name I think fitting, given the story above, for a dedication to the band. I decided to record this onto tape, really lo-fi with strong tape limiting, emulating the wear my Kraftwerk tapes were in.Well that's it. I hope you enjoy the track as much as I enjoyed writing it. If you like it, give it a thumbs up. If enough people enjoy this style, I'll record a Hi-Fi version of the song. I enjoy the style and will likely write more songs like it.
