I often think NUX is very much overlooked in the overdrive pedal game. All four of these pedals are fantastic: they sound great, the build quality is decent, and they’re all perfectly priced for budget players at around the $50/€50 mark.
First up is the ‘6ixty5ive Overdrive, which is one of my very favorite drive pedals from the past couple of years. It’s based on the iconic Paul Cochrane Timmy, and the boutique Timmy Vemuram Jan Ray Timmy clone.
The ‘6ixty5ive has four controls – Level, Gain, Bass and Treble – plus a trim control (as you’ll find on the Jan Ray) which lets you tweak the tones further. At $50, the ‘6ixty5ive Overdrive is perfect for everything from a transparent clean boost to sparkly low gain drives, thicker medium gain crunch and even some pretty gnarly higher gain sounds! If I had my way, every guitar player would try this pedal out.
Next up is the newest offering, the ’63 Diamond, which is a Vox In A Box – specifically, it’s supposed to be something like a vintage Vox AC30 Top Boost model. And it does turn an amp’s clean channel into something far more exciting, for sure, especially if you dig Brian May and Queen’s guitar sounds! With Volume, Master and Cut controls alongside a Top Boost Switch, the $50 Diamond is a great choice for anyone looking to add some affordable Voxiness/British Invasion guitar tones to their setup.
Then there’s the Steel Singer Drive, which is based on the warm and mid-rich rock tones of the legendary Dumble amps. At around $40, the Steel Singer is the cheapest pedal here, and it’s the simplest too, with Volume, Gain and Filter controls to shape your sounds.
Finally, we have the Horseman, which is a mini Klon Centaur clone. Featuring two gain modes and the standard Treble, Output and Gain controls, the Horseman – at around $60 – is going to be an ideal choice for anyone looking to fill a small space on their board with another gain option. Klons are great for everything from clean boosts to gritty drive sounds, and the Horseman does not disappoint at all in that regard.
So, if you’re currently on the lookout for an affordable overdrive pedal to spice up your sounds, or you simply want to add another gain flavor to your rig, then these four NUX offerings are definitely worth a listen – and that’s exactly what we’re going to do in this video!
In this video I play a couple of loops – one on my Epiphone Les Paul’s bridge humbucker, and the other on the bridge single coil pickup of my Fender Telecaster – which I use to really tweak the knobs of all four pedals to hear how they compare. Let me know which one you think sounds best in the comments!

My setup was as follows: I ran the pedals into the front end of my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic pedal amp, then went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That’s it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to record and play the loops. Here’s some links to those bits of gear:
