This German island shouldn't exist, but it still does—thanks to its resilient people.
Welcome to Oland, a tiny Hallig island that’s part of a group of small German islands located in the Wadden Sea in northern Germany.

What is remarkable about this 2-square-kilometer island is that it’s situated at, or even slightly below, sea level.

Unlike most coastal areas, Oland has no dike to protect it. Almost every week, the island is flooded. The only thing that prevents the houses from being completely submerged is a 3-meter-tall warft—an artificial mound built by piling up soil and carefully maintained by its residents.

Reaching the mainland isn’t simple for Olanders. There’s no port to rely on. Instead, they use a small wagon that travels on a narrow-gauge railway, built in 1923. The 20-minute journey is only possible when the island isn’t flooded.
