Whoa. Fiction!

Wotakoi was the third show that I watched after I began my new life as a weeb last year, and probably set my preference for easy-going, slice-of-life/comedy anime as a means of recuperation after heavier stuff (I had just finished Anohana and Your Lie in April).

However, even then I thought that the premise was funny given that it was a story about two characters who are incredibly different from those around them trying to make a relationship work out and all the ups and downs that result from that. Sure, some of it was more serious than others and there isn’t a true “conclusion” to the show since it’s not something that demands one, but it still felt incredibly genuine. Perhaps it’s because I like romances where characters get together early and have to figure out life instead of being handed a “happily ever after” after a “will-they/won’t-they” season.

But rewatching the show a few months ago, it suddenly hit a lot harder. Not only do I get all the JoJo and Evangelion references now, but I feel like I myself have developed into a much stronger otaku. I mean, I nerd out over anime and piano now in a way few people do (and since it’s two things, I suppose it makes love twice as hard for me?), and if this YouTube channel continues being successful it might even become a part of my career.

But I suppose that’s the inherent challenge of relationships, especially romantic ones: working through differences and finding solutions that enable both parties to grow into deeper enjoyment of the relationship. It isn’t merely just expecting to be accepted for who you are, but learning to love and care for the other in such a way that you can see your own flaws and desire to work past them for the sake of the other.

Perhaps I am imposing a theme on the show that it didn’t intend to convey, but it did get me thinking about relationships and all that more realistically than your typical drama/romance could, simply because it was, well, a lot more realistic.

Which finally brings me to Fiction. Undoubtedly the first thing that stood out to me was the song’s jovial, lilting atmosphere. The bounciness, the dryness, the rhythm, all seemed to fit the mood of the show incredibly well.

Reading the lyrics only serves to reassert that, for every relationship is truly a story in the making. There will always be happy times, there will always be sad times, and yet with a positive outlook and the proper telos everything just serves as beautiful additions to the growing narrative known as “our story”.

Someday, looking back, there will be spots where you’ll want to close the book. Sometimes it will be hard to take responsibility for some of the events. But it’s always full of emotion, and the excitement is truly never-ending.

And I suppose that all this is applicable to my YouTube journey as well :)

I recorded this version originally back in March, and it was surprisingly difficult. The arrangement itself felt very inconvenient (hence the botched notes) and the interpretation was hard for me to figure out especially in comparison to the original (hence a bit of harshness and monotonous dynamics). Like everything needed to be super bouncy, but at the same time textural contrasts where things were smooth needed to be used as well. I also didn’t realize that I rushed and disrupted the tempo as much as I did and how much I pushed it towards the end.

I suppose the song needed a few more months of just stewing before it could actualize itself, and, well, the way I played it a few weeks ago at my livestream was certainly a lot better than this (so you should go listen to it! ). But it’s still interesting and cool to hear my original ideas and struggles, and everything is always a work in progress!

Also, I chose this arrangement because of how well it seemed to encapsulate the original song. I didn’t really look at the score though, so I guess I only have myself to blame for the technical issues, but either ways it was really, really fun to play and work on (which I hope you can see from the video), and definitely outside of my comfort zone for sure!

Anyways, I hope you enjoyed the video and that love isn’t as hard for you as it is for me!

Until next time!
