Alone in the Darkness is the first full length album released by Midnight Thorn.
Midnight Thorn is an independent dark electronic music project influenced by goth, industrial, darkwave, dark-electro post-punk and synth-wave
genres
Midnight thorn is a project I started about six months ago. I had recently left a local Indy rock band called Mint Green Elephants after a frustrating experience with the band and a tumultuous romantic relationship with the lead singer. I decided that it was time to start making music all on my own as I felt myself to me more of a composer than just a guitarist. After the end of my time with the band I started to become heavily involved with the local goth community in Albuquerque. I fell in love with the music and the culture and was inspired to make my own music influenced by the many styles of music that appeal to the goth community. This inspired my title of the album Alone in the Darkness as I found myself to be very happy as a single individual in the goth community and to work alone as a gothic musical artist. I wanted the sound of this album to somewhat be a collaboration of the various styles of music that appeals to the gothic community rather than focusing on a specific sound or subgenre and was deliberate about changing the vibe, sound and vocal styles throughout the album. Every bit of music was recorded and mixed and mastered completely by me using GarageBand and a Launchpad midi controller as well as a little guitar and bass on love to hate as well as some flavor added by GarageBand’s loops and a little polishing from ditto’s Ai mastering service. All the vocals were recorded with the mic on my iPhone. Though having little resources at my disposal and limited recording experience, I learned quickly and worked tirelessly, putting in countless hours trying to produce the best sound quality I could. This album has been my obsession for the last 6 months and I have treated it like a second job. With much frustration and many late nights i finally got things to where I was happy with them and had spent next to no money on my production.
The lyrics of the album focus on the tearing down of the illusions we hold on to and the lies we tell ourselves about ourselves and love and the world around us as well as the disappointment and disinfatuation that comes along with true self honesty. I do believe though I believe the “purification through fire is worth it in the end. Love to Hate was inspired by the Tumultuous relationship with the lead singer of my former band I referred to earlier.
Lost in the jungle was inspired by a common theme in goth music of being lost in the Forest or city etc.. Breaks was inspired by Aleister Crowley‘s “Book of Lies”(also falsely called “Breaks”) which is a collection of poems that deal with the farcical nature of thought. Each verse is a summary of two of the many poems in the book. Echolocation(Amlplified) was inspired by being underground in caves and finding that even when you are in comlete darkness sound can give you a pretty good idea of your surroundings. Even when you think you can’t see you still canon a way. The Necromancer was inspired by “the one that got away” and my failed attempts to recreate the love I had for her through other people who I was drawn to because of their similar qualities to her but found they were just “ghosts of her” not the real thing and it wasn’t enough. Witch Hunt was inspired by observation of people with strong religious and political views that tend to isolate what and who they are exposed to because new information threatens their worldview. Terrier work was inspired by Aleister Crowley’s poem “Terrier-work”, the importance of doubt and scrutiny, and the dangers of thinking you know it all or have it all figured out. Have you? is inspired by my personal experiences with disappointments in life and I really feel like we all have felt these different ways at some point and that it’s important to accept those disappointments not just pretend like they don’t exist. Life is full of disappointment and it’s something we all go through and it’s ok to feel that way sometimes.
Overall the Album is about diving into the darkness of truth and seeing and accepting the world for what it is behind all the illusions.
