Diabetes
In this video we are going to talk about diabetes also known as diabetes mellitus.
Diabetes is a chronic condition in which blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is higher than usual. Blood glucose is the main source of energy for the body and comes from the food that we eat.
The pancreas and organ that lies near the stomach makes a hormone called insulin.
Insulin helps glucose from food get into body cells to be used for energy.
With diabetes the body either doesn't make enough insulin or can't effectively use the insulin.
Consistent high glucose levels can damage the body and lead to the failure of various organs.
Types of Diabetes
There are three types of diabetes
Type 1
Type 2
Gestational diabetes
Type 1 Diabetes
Let us first talk about type 1 diabetes. In type 1 diabetes the pancreas does not produce insulin.
It generally occurs in early adulthood or teenage years. Approximately 10% of all diabetes cases are type 1 patients. With type 1 diabetes, a person will need to take insulin injections for the rest of their life.
Type 2 diabetes
In type 2 diabetes, the cells in the body do not react to insulin, this is also known as insulin resistance or the insulin produced by the pancreas does not match the requirement of the body.
Type 2 diabetes can occur at any age but is more prominent with humans who are above the age of 40 years.
Diabetes can be controlled with a healthy lifestyle like exercise and having healthy food, medications, and in some cases by taking external insulin.
Your doctor may recommend different types of insulin depending upon the severity of diabetes.
Gestational diabetes:
The third type is gestational diabetes. Gestational diabetes affects females during pregnancy.
It can lead to complications for both mother and child.
It can be controlled with exercises and medications, 90% of cases are resolved after pregnancy and 10% may go to develop type 2 diabetes.
Hope this video will help you lead a healthy life. Thank you for watching.
