See related blog post: My sister's MacBook Pro had some serious problems; the infamous Radeon GPU glitch meant that there were numerous problems (stuck on grey screen during boot, safe boot not working, recovery mode not working, horizontal tearing, color glitching, etc.).
This was when I was about ready to throw in the towel. Luckily an SMD reset fixed this weird glitch. No idea how I caused it... I guess the moral of the story is be careful when messing with EFI firmware!
