On 17 March 1968, Irishman Michael 'Mick' Meaney spent St Patrick's Day buried underground in Kilburn, London. The barman was attempting to set a new world record for the longest time spent buried underground. Having first been buried on 21 February 1968, Meaney had already spent 25 days underground, Meaney would go for another 36 before eventually being raised on 22 April 1968, after a total of 61 days underground. ITN covered a great deal of Meaney's time buried alive, filming his burial, his celebration of St Patrick's Day, a visit by former heavyweight champion boxer Henry Cooper, and his release. Sadly, despite his efforts, Meaney never made it into the Guinness Book of World Records, as no judge had been present at the event.
