The jazz played by Brad Mehldau's ex-drummer – and Wayne Shorter's current drummer – offers thoughtful, meditative beauty, long notes held over a sort of continuous drum solo, with changing dynamics, with solos dominated by whole notes and half notes, with almost no quarter notes, even fewer eighth notes. The sounds of the alto sax or the bass clarinet (Melvin Butler) and the tenor sax (Myron Walden) seduce, the suave piano of John Cowherd arouses reverie and everything calls for listening comfort.
