Tree Planting: What are Girdling Roots

Davey arborist Lou Meyers shares an important step when planting container-grown trees to help avoid the continued growth of girdling roots.

When you remove the tree from the container, you will notice the roots are growing in a circular pattern. If these roots aren't addressed before planting, they will continue to wrap around the hole causing the girdling roots to "choke the tree."

So before planting your tree, Lou demonstrates how to cut the roots in preparation for planting. Don't worry, it doesn't hurt the tree. The roots will regenerate!
