On 24 February 1956, a seance was held at 63 Wycliffe Road in order to free 15-year-old Shirley Hitchings from the poltergeist that was believed to have been plaguing her and her family for weeks. Local spiritualist Harry Hanks led the seance, in which he supposedly entered a trance to communicate with the spirit bothering Shirley. Afterwards, Hanks informed the 15-year-old that she had been freed of her condition by "the spirit people". ITN's Lynne Reid-Banks was present to observe the seance and to interview Hitchings afterwards.

The case of the Battersea Poltergeist is said by believers to be one of the most well-documented "hauntings" in post-war British history. In early 1956, the Hitchings family on Wycliffe Road were troubled by unexplained fires around the house and the appearance of messages on the walls. Most of the activity seemed to centre around Shirley Hitchings' bedroom, and it soon became apparent that Shirley felt a connection to a spirit named Fred. The seance featured in this footage was arranged to bring the hauntings to an end.
