In June 1980, ITN's Martyn Lewis travelled to Soviet Central Asia, to understand life and society in the Soviet Socialist Republics of Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan. With Soviet forces having invaded neighbouring Afghanistan in December 1979, and with the Iranian Revolution prompting a revival of political Islam throughout the region, Lewis examined how the traditions of Uzbek culture interacted with Soviet ideology after 55 years of Communist rule. A series of four reports looked at Uzbekistan's Islamic revival, everyday life in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan's Soviet economy amid Leonid Brezhnev's drive to increase production across the USSR, and Uzbekistan's system of collectivised farming.
