
60 years ago, the 1 millionth Gastarbeiter, or guest worker, arrived in Germany from Portugal. Armando Rodrigues de Sá was met with a surprise celebration, but his story—like many others—highlights the challenges and contributions of the guest workers who were crucial in rebuilding post-war West and East Germany. Since they were meant to be temporary workers, they often received little support in integrating into their new country. #dwhistoryandculture
