In 1895, Major S Hooper proposed a Mardi Gras-like festival for the city of Denver. In 1893, silver prices fell and there was a severe drought that limited food production. And so the Festival of Mountain and Plain was born in 1895 to bring economic development back to Denver.
The Festival of Mountain and Plain ran from 1895 to 1902. They tried to revive it in 1912, but it failed.
In 1983, the Denver Chamber of Commerce erected the 16th Street Mall in downtown Denver and threw the second revival of the Festival of Mountain and Plain. However, it was renamed Taste of Colorado and has occurred ever since. They shut down for COVID last year, but it's back up and running.
The Taste of Colorado Festival used to attract about half a million visitors from all over the country, especially Colorado. However, I'm not sure what the attendance is this year.
That said, there are a lot of people here. There are very few masks for such a well-attended event. I understand it's outside, but it's shoulder to shoulder in a lot of places.
