Recently, Turkey announced that it plans to join BRICS. This was made known by the spokesman of the Turkish President, Omer Celik. He said ““Our president has already expressed multiple times that we wish to become a member of BRICS, "and"Our request in this matter is clear, and the process is proceeding within this framework.” Now the reason why this is a big news is that Turkey is a member of NATO and also an aspiring member of the European Union. So the big question is “why does a country that is seemingly allied to the West, plan to join BRICS, an organization that is an alternative to Western organization? Let’s find out.
As an individual, there is nothing unusual when you decide to go for an alternative when something you want is not accessible right? Well, this is what is happening with Turkey, the European Union, and BRICS. You see, for a very long time, Turkey has been applying to join the European Union but for some reason which we will explain later, Turkey’s application has never been accepted. So, as any sensible individual would do, Turkey has decided to explore another alternative to the European Union, namely BRICS. But guess what? Now that Turkey has expressed interest in joining BRICS, the EU is concerned and is trying to accelerate efforts to strengthen relations with Turkey.
