Awilda: In the 5th century, Scandinavian princess Awilda defied her father's plans for an arranged marriage to Prince Alf of Denmark. Disguising herself as a male sailor, she escaped with a group of female companions, commandeering a ship and later leading a crew of pirates. Her fleet became notorious, prompting Prince Alf to pursue them. Upon their confrontation, Awilda revealed her true identity, and, impressed by each other's courage, they married, with Awilda becoming Queen of Denmark. While elements of this story are legendary, it underscores themes of defiance and adventure.

Across the northern seas so cold
A tale of courage bold, retold
Of Awilda, fierce and free
The Pirate Queen upon the sea
Born of royal blood and might
A Scandinavian king’s delight
But princess life was not her dream
She sought the call of ocean’s gleam

Oh, Awilda, fearless and bold
Through icy seas and winds untold
She steered her ship by stars and moon
The Pirate Princess, fortune’s boon
Raise the flag, hoist the sail
For Awilda, fierce in every gale!

Her father, King of Gothland’s land
Desired her to wed a man
A noble prince, the famed Prince Alf
But Awilda laughed and turned her back
No chains of court, nor crown of gold
Could bind the heart that wouldn’t fold
She fled the palace in the night
To seek the seas and claim her right

A band of maidens, strong and true
She gathered as her loyal crew
They sailed aboard a stolen ship
And set their course on freedom’s grip

Through the Baltic’s foamy spray
Awilda forged her pirate way
With sails unfurled, her ship would roam
The northern seas became her home
They plundered merchant ships with glee
As legends grew from sea to sea
Her skill in battle fierce and true
Struck fear in men and vessels too

In the year of old, 'tis said and sung
This Pirate Queen was still so young
Awilda’s crew, of maidens fair
Fought Vikings off with strength and care
But then her fate did twist one day
As Prince Alf sailed into the fray
He led his men with iron hand
To challenge Awilda’s pirate band

Alf's royal ship, of battle strong
Did clash with hers, they fought so long
Awilda’s crew began to tire
But her spirit burned like fire
When Alf himself stepped to her deck
Their fates entwined, a twist, a check
He saw in her no foe to fight
But a kindred soul, wild and bright

The prince who sought her heart’s defeat
Instead found love, and knew no fleet
Could match the strength of she who ruled
A pirate queen so proud and schooled

Awilda, charmed by Alf’s brave heart
Chose to let her pirate ways depart
She joined her fate with the prince’s hand
Together they would rule the land
No longer pirate of the sea
But queen beside her king was she
Yet still the sailors sing her name
Her pirate spirit, wild, untamed

So, history says this daring dame
Was once a pirate of great fame
Awilda sailed with might and pride
But love brought her to Alf’s side
In Denmark’s lore, their reign would stand,
A pirate queen who chose the land
