Officer Alex Del Rio was conducting traffic enforcement in the 7000 block of Sheridan Street on November 22nd, 2008, and was attempting to stop a speeding vehicle, when he was involved in a motor vehicle crash. Officer Del Rio passed away at the scene. Officer Del Rio started his career with the Hollywood Police Department in 1996 as a part-time Community Service Aide and became a police officer in 1999. He held positions on patrol, special operations motors, and Special Operations DUI and traffic.
Officer Del Rio was highly trained in traffic enforcement, impaired driving, traffic homicide investigations, and police motorcycle operations. He also received numerous awards during his career. He was selected as Officer of the Month in October of 2003, and received more than two-dozen supervisors’ commendations and letters of appreciation from citizens.
Officer Del Rio was born in Miami and grew up in South Florida. He enjoyed physical fitness and weight training and often competed in the state of Florida police Olympics. We will never forget Officer Del Rio’s life and legacy.
