John Dowland is, for me, the Johann Sebastian Bach of the Renaissance – it was through his music that my interest in early music, especially from the Renaissance period, truly began.
I picked up and emphasized much of the ornamentation by listening to recordings of great lutenists like Nigel North, Paul O’Dette, and Jakob Lindberg.

In Mistress Winter’s Jump, the short notes seem to imitate jumping, while the repeated A–E–A–E figures remind me of a bird call – I really liked that idea.

ChatGPT pointed out that the title might be a play on words: Winter’s Jump could mean the literal “jump of Mistress Winter,” but it may also subtly suggest a dance or even a flirtatious situation. Dowland often used poetic and ambiguous titles like this.

His music has inspired many artists, including Benjamin Britten and Sting, who even recorded an entire album of Dowland’s songs.

Highly recommended listening! 🎶
