I got ravaged by copyright issues on this one, but there's plenty of good parts left.
That's on me since a) the selections weren't deep enough, b) too much video filler.
I recently picked up some XDJ-1000 MK2's which has given me more options for how to play songs.
I've definitely improved since the last mix. I am approaching practice more seriously. I think before a couple of months ago I thought as long as I knew how to beat match by ear, that it would be a good mix. But by watching, studying, practicing I am seeing improvement in eq mixing, phrasing, and effect use.
I've also been more organized with my music collection and am putting much more time into cataloging new songs and maintaining cue points and playlists. This is giving the ability to stay in a specific "sound" or "mood" better and also only playing key sections of songs, quicker mixing.
There are still some trainwrecks left in this mix, but this will be one of many and is a true one-take learning/recording situation. The worst is around 13:05 and this was caused by not knowing the new track well. The beat changed unexpectedly. I did notice how when recording and something is going wrong my urgency to correct it is much faster than if I am practicing.
For track discovery my current plan is to research older club/house/deep house records first before acquiring newer music. I think this will help with refining my personal definition of what a "good" track is and forming a certain "sound" I'm trying to find when applying it to finding newer tracks.
I came accross a 1995 Cajmere record with Horny (Horny Toad Mix) on it which I love and that opened up a good place to start learning about Cajual, Relief, and Prescription records. (Hence the video title) It's nice how looking through the discography also brings up compilations and ideas for other labels to research.
What improvements I see for this mix:
-Be faster and more confident with transitions in certain situations.
-If a transition is failing badly, quickly transition. Don't try to save it.
-If using spiral or a delay, make sure the BPM is matching the tracks.
-Watch the highs better when using filter effects.
-In higher energy sections, mix faster to maintain the momentum.
Planned improvements for the next mix:
-New camera setup. The Zoom Q2n stops recording around the 40 minute mark. I'm not sure the exact reason. It may be overheating. The video must capture the whole set.
-Improve eq mixing/filter/sweep
-Concentrate on practicing new transitions I haven't yet used.
-Less looping when transitioning, this was done to be safe on certain cases. But it also would sound better to play out without the loop.
-Acquiring more tracks. I think the amount of tracks available is forcing the BPM drops.
-Use songs less likely to have copyright issues. I usually am using niche albums, so I did forget to factor in copyright complications into track selection.
Feedback is always welcome. I think there are some obvious improvements to be made but this series is meant to track progress and improve mixing ability.
All mixes wont be house / club / jungle but this is what I'm really into right now. I want to start limiting the scope of the mixes to a certain theme. I like that format when looking for mixes on Youtube.
