Dutch hardcore, like speedcore and gabber, is a subgenre of hardcore techno and one of the most extreme forms of dance music. It provides an escape for young people from Holland’s post-industrial ghost towns surrounding Rotterdam. But the Protestant Church, who believe the music is “satanic and evil”, is fighting back by picketing the parties and encouraging people on the scene to turn to God.
Big Night Out showcases how partying has changed over the years; rather than being just a means to celebrate and have a good time, young people now party as an act of rebellion, subsistence or survival.
In this episode, originally aired in 2016, host Clive Martin, traverses the Dutch Hardcore scene (meeting artists like F**king Bastards and Pressterror at places like Dominator Festival and Club Rodenberg) and tries to work out how an underground style of electronic music created culture wars that turned the bible belt into a generational battleground.
