Aircraft fighting wildfires in the Los Angeles area are dropping not just water, but hundreds of thousands of gallons of hot-pink fire suppressant to help slow the flames.

The fires, fueled by strong Santa Ana winds, have killed at least 24 people, displaced thousands, and destroyed over 12,000 structures since January 7.

While fire agencies call the suppressant an essential tool, there are concerns about its impact on wildlife and the environment. The mixture, made of water, ammonium phosphate, and iron oxide, is seen as safe for humans but may affect wildlife and ecosystems.
