Further testing by leading medical labs and international specialists confirmed the existence of a novel antigen under the Cromer blood group system. This new antigen has been officially named CRIB, standing for Cromer–India–Bangalore. It is now recognized as the first of its kind ever documented, making the woman the only known person in the world with this blood profile.
The discovery came to light during preparation for a cardiac surgery, when no compatible donor blood could be found. Doctors took extraordinary precautions and performed the surgery without transfusion. The woman recovered well, highlighting both the uniqueness of her case and the success of meticulous medical planning.
Following this discovery, Indian health authorities have launched a Rare Donor Registry to track and support individuals with unusual blood types. This initiative aims to enhance transfusion safety and advance medical knowledge in the realm of rare blood groups and immune responses.
