A song that truly says “The one that got away”.

“One more time, One more chance” is the song that plays at the end of 5 Centimeters per Second, one of Makoto Shinkai’s earlier works before Your Name.

What I found interesting was that it seemingly tackles a similar storyline of love that transcends time and place, yet the outcomes are drastically different. An air of fantasticism hovers over Your Name, but 5 Centimeters per Second exists in cold, hard reality.

Maybe that’s why I like the movie so much even though to some people it’s a bummer: I feel like I’m being shown a vignette of real life.

This song, in the midst of that, encapsulates the feeling of trying to make a relationship work, knowing that it can’t and won’t, and that it isn’t your fault that it doesn’t come to fruition, yet still asking for one more chance to make amends. It strikes at an unsettlingly raw part of the heart, especially if you’ve experienced heartbreak in this manner before.

To me, the song almost expresses a reticence to acknowledge the reality of failure, which is why I take so much more time through the whole thing. I play slowly because it almost feels as though I can’t bring myself to move on, and it’s supposed to stick like that. I know in other music my tendency is to linger a bit too long and not keep moving, but for this one it’s a very intentional decision.

I recorded this one in January alongside other pieces like Kirameki and Brave Shine, and I sort of see it as the emotional predecessor to both. It’s interesting to hear my thoughts again through the music given that it’s been so long since I’ve last played this.
