Description:
How does the Netherlands increase its territory every year? Let's dive into the fascinating story of Dutch land reclamation!
Back in the 14th century, the Netherlands was losing land to the North Sea. Rising sea levels threatened to shrink the country even further. However, instead of succumbing to the ocean, the Netherlands fought back and expanded its territory by 18% over the last 700 years.
This remarkable achievement is the result of a long-standing battle with the sea. Unlike typical territorial expansions through wars with neighboring countries, the Netherlands waged war against the ocean itself.
The final blow to the sea came with the construction of a massive dyke in 1932. This impressive structure, known as the Afsluitdijk, is 32 kilometers long and transformed a portion of the North Sea into a freshwater lake by enclosing it. The saltwater was drained out, and fresh water from a continuous river flow replaced it.
What's truly astounding is the creation of new land in the form of polders, such as Flevoland and the Noordoostpolder. These areas didn't exist before the Afsluitdijk and represent the new territory of the Netherlands created in the last 90 years. This newly created land is roughly the same size as the metropolitan area of Paris.
Join us as we explore the ingenious methods and engineering marvels that have allowed the Netherlands to reclaim land from the sea and continue to expand its territory. Don't forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more amazing stories of human ingenuity and environmental engineering!

How does the Netherlands increases its territory every year?
This is the map of Netherlands from the 14th century, where the north sea was eating a lot The Netherlands land. Rising sea levels would normally make The Netherlands to shrink in size even more by the present time, instead, this is how The Netherlands look today, it expanded its territory with 18% in the last 700 years. You see, this new land represents the spoils of a war, but not with a neighbor country as it’s usually the case, but with the ocean.
The final blow The Netherlands gave to the ocean was this massive dyke built in 1932. This enclosure Dijk is 32 kilometers long and by separating this part of The Netherlands they actually transformed the sea into a fresh water lake. They drained out the salty water while this river continuously provided fresh water instead.
What’s truly amazing is that this polders here: Flevolandpolder and The Noordoostpolder didn’t exist before the Afsluitdijk and represent the new land of The Netherlands created in the last 90 years which is around the same size as the Metropolitan area of Paris.
