Metal is an emotionally evocative genre of music, and depression and hopelessness are some of its specialties. DSBM, funeral doom, and various other styles of metal bring forth some of the most visceral and intense sensations of despair in all of music. What leads people to engaging with such haunting music, and why are so many young people, particularly on the internet, so attracted to media filled with depression and hopelessness? How is contemporary society, as well as recurrent trends throughout history, relevant and what role does the hyper-alienating and isolating capitalist reality have? Black-pillers, doomers, nihilists, cynics, misanthropes, the depressed, the alienated, the internet-consumed and all things hopeless will be discussed.
