On 14 April 1972, ITN's Christopher Wain reported from 'Free Derry', the self-declared autonomous Irish nationalist area of Derry, Northern Ireland. Recording masked gunmen of the Provisional Irish Republican Army (PIRA), more commonly known as the 'Provos', Wain explained that this was the first time he and his crew had been allowed to film the Provisionals at work. Wain also interviewed a group of local civilians. Speaking less than three months after Bloody Sunday, the Derry massacre in which British paratroopers killed 13 unarmed civilians during a civil rights march, the local women told Wain that they were grateful for the IRA presence.
