On 2 October 1954 Elvis made his one and only appearance at the legendary Grand Ole Opry. Elvis's performance was a tad too rock'n'roll for the sensitivities of the Opry's country music audience.
In fact, the Opry's manager Jim Denny reputedly told Elvis backstage that he should, "stick to truck driving".
Ironically a couple of weeks later he established himself with the country audience at the Opry's biggest radio competitor, the Louisiana Hayride. Elvis went on the have 55 hits on the Billboard Country Top-40.
