Most of us follow the Gregorian calendar without giving it much thought: January, February, March... But have you ever wondered where those month names come from or why they even matter? The truth is, the names and structure we use today are pretty random. For example, "October" means "the eighth month," even though it’s now the tenth month on our calendar. So, is this really the best way to keep track of time?
Other cultures have come up with creative and practical ways to divide the year. For instance, the Natchez people of North America use 13 lunar cycles to mark their months, naming each one after something important for that time of year, like Deer Hunting Month or Strawberry Month. These names help people focus on what’s really happening in nature around them.
