‘Stay’ is a doo-wop song written by Maurice Williams when he was just 15 years old, first recorded in 1960 by Williams and his group, the Zodiacs. Later, successful cover versions were released by The Hollies, The Four Seasons, and Jackson Browne.
In Jackson Browne's version, backing singer Rosemary Butler passionately belts out “Oh, won't you stay…,” followed by multi-instrumentalist David Lindley delivering a spectacular falsetto that adds a playful, almost parody-like charm to the song.
There’s an interesting backstory behind this track: a radio DJ played Track 9, “The Load Out,” but then accidentally kept the station on past that, playing through to Track 10 "Stay" without switching. Listeners thought it was one continuous song and enjoyed it, so later DJs began playing two songs back-to-back, and both tracks charted equally on the Billboard charts. In 1978, Jackson Browne officially released a single combining both songs, titled “The Load Out/Stay,” creating a seamless medley of the two.
